The Fear That Keeps You Trapped
Jaineel Mistry
Have you ever felt that no matter how much you achieve, it’s never enough? Or perhaps you’re striving relentlessly in your career, your relationships, or even in your personal growth—but the effort feels hollow, like you’re chasing something you can’t quite name.
There’s an underlying fear that quietly drives so much of what we do:
“I’m not good enough.”
For many, this fear begins in childhood. Think back to when you were graded at school or encouraged to behave a certain way to gain approval. As children, we naturally yearn to please our parents, teachers, and peers. We start to believe that love, acceptance, and worthiness are things we must earn.
This belief often carries into adulthood. It manifests in how we approach our careers, relationships, and goals. We build lives around proving our worth, yet so many of us achieve external success only to feel internally empty.
Why This Fear is So Insidious
In my own journey, I’ve seen this fear play out. Early on in my coaching and writing career, I noticed moments where I veered away from sharing what was truly authentic to me. Instead, I found myself writing or working in ways that aligned with what would make me look successful. Why? To feel like I good enough and gain approval from others following my work.
But here’s the truth: when you’re driven by a fear of inadequacy, your energy shifts. Your actions come not from a place of inspiration but from desperation—an attempt to “prove” yourself, rather than express yourself.
This fear-driven mindset is something I’ve also noticed in conversations with many of my clients. They’ve built careers, relationships, or pursued goals not out of genuine desire but to validate their worth. And even when they hit their milestones, they still feel empty. Imagine living your whole life like this?
It’s a human experience. But it doesn’t have to be your reality.
Where Are You Coming From?
Here’s a powerful question to reflect on: Where am I coming from?
As we approach the end of the year, it’s natural to start setting goals or a direction for 2025. But before you write down your ambitions, pause and ask yourself:
The distinction is critical. Goals born from fear may motivate you for a while, but they leave you feeling drained, disconnected, and unfulfilled. Goals born from inspiration, however, align with your authentic self. They create excitement, flow, and a sense of aliveness.
For example, imagine setting a goal to get a promotion at work. Ask yourself:
This simple question, Where am I coming from?, can help you align your goals with your true desires rather than external expectations.
