3 Distinctions Behind Why Success Still Feels Empty (and What to Do About It)
Jaineel Mistry
“I would give away whole £30 million property portfolio in an instant to experience the peace and alignment you seem to have”
This is what an entrepreneur mentioned to me a few years back.
I thought this was a one-off at the time, but it wasn’t.
This week I had two more conversations along the lines of…
“Jaineel, I would give up all my money to do something that’s actually aligned with who I am.”
After more than 7 years of coaching such high achievers – entrepreneurs and senior executives, here’s why it’s a common pattern and 3 distinctions to help you make a transition from:
The Problem: Success Built on Survival
We live in a culture that glorifies the grind. Hit the revenue target, scale the business and 10x your output.
And it works. For a while.
But here’s what nobody talks about: no matter how successful you become in monetary terms, if you’re operating from survival mode, you stay in survival mode.
The targets only get bigger, the pressure only intensifies whilst the emptiness grows.
I’ve sat across from people who have achieved everything society tells them to chase – the money, the status, the recognition – and they feel completely lost inside.
I know because I was one of them. At 25, looking out a window in the London skyline, having “made it” in my career, I felt internally hollow.
Maybe you’re in your own version of this right now. Successful on paper, restless in your soul. In an existential crisis. Feeling like you’re not making the difference you’re really here to make.
3 Distinctions That Change Everything
As we close out the Year of the Snake (a year of shedding) and prepare to enter the Year of the Horse (a year of powerful momentum), I want to share three distinctions that have transformed my clients’ lives.
1. Soul Line vs. Goal Line
A distinction I learned from the University of Santa Monica’s Spiritual Psychology division:
The goal line is the horizontal plane of achievement: salary, promotions, net worth. Everything you can measure.
The soul line is the vertical axis of being: presence, truth, alignment, who you’re becoming.
Most high achievers operate from a low soul line and high goal line.
In this instance, your identity becomes conditional. You’re only as good as your last win and you only feel complete, whole, worthy IF your goal line is strong.
The aim is to have a high soul line (alignment) and that lead to intentionally creating high goal line (material success from a place of alignment).
How do you know which line you’re operating from?
Ask yourself: What’s the energy behind my goals?
Soul-line energy feels like: calm excitement, spacious intention, service, deep alignment, a full-body yes.
Goal-line energy feels like: panic, scarcity, guilt, performance pressure, a need to prove.
The soul line doesn’t ask you to give up ambition. It asks you to purify it. To build a life that expands you, not just one that impresses others.
I’ve written an in depth article on this distinction you can read .
2. Rise to Your Calling vs. Finding Your Purpose
Finding purpose is a daunting task and as you transition to a life of greater alignment, this daunting project is likely to stop you.
Purpose isn’t something you find on a mountaintop. It’s something you grow into through alignment.
I shift our clients to thinking about what they are being called to in this moment.
Your calling is far more immediate. It’s the inner nudge. The spark of aliveness that draws you toward the next honest step.
You know you’re touching your calling when time disappears. When you feel energised rather than drained. When something inside you awakens.
Rising to your calling doesn’t require mapping your entire life. It simply asks you to move toward what feels true now.
One of my former clients – a doctor with the suburban dream – felt lost despite external success. Every LinkedIn scroll left him comparing himself to others who seemed to be thriving.
I asked him to notice what genuinely fed his energy. Not what he should pursue, but what made him feel alive.
He began paying attention. The topics that sparked curiosity: longevity, human performance, entrepreneurship. He followed those sparks.
Eighteen months later, he opened a longevity clinic aligned with who he’s becoming.
His external world changed because he honored his inner truth first.
Howard Thurman said it perfectly: “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and do it. Because what the world needs are people who have come alive.”
3. Energy Feeding vs. Energy Draining (Your Year-End Practice)
As we close this year, here’s the most practical thing you can do:
Reflect on what fed you energy this year versus what drained it.
As create space over the holiday period, keep two simple lists:
What fed my energy in 2025? Moments, tasks, conversations, topics that made you feel alive, open, curious, creative.
What drained my energy in 2025? Activities or interactions that left you feeling heavy, contracted, misaligned.
Notice the patterns. Your calling lives in the things that consistently feed your energy.
This applies to everything: what you eat, the work you do, the people you spend time with, the environments you’re in.
The Real Win
The soul line doesn’t ask you to give up success. It asks you to redefine it.
Let your goals be a byproduct of your truth – not a distraction from your wounds.
Because when your soul leads, success doesn’t just look good. It feels good.
And that’s the real win.
