The Life-Changing Power of Spaciousness
Jaineel Mistry
Ever feel like you’re racing through life – constantly achieving, yet missing something?
You’re building, scaling, leading – yet life feels tight.
Tight schedules. Tight thinking. Tight breathing.
You move from one call to another, one task to the next – yet, despite all the momentum, you feel… off. Rushed. Restless. Scattered.
I know that feeling well.
For years, I thought that more doing meant more progress. My calendar was packed, my mind was fuller, but my days felt hollow.
Sometimes I still catch myself doing this, and when I do, I remind myself of the power of Yutori.
What Is Yutori? More Than Just “Space”
Yutori (ゆとり) is a Japanese concept meaning “room,” “margin,” or “breathing space.” But it’s not just about empty gaps in your day.
It’s about creating space in your life – for clarity, connection, and creativity.
The Japanese integrate Yutori into everything – from the spacious design of their gardens to the deliberate slowness of a tea ceremony. It’s about leaving room for life to enter and flow through.
In a world obsessed with filling – calendars, inboxes, minds – Yutori is the art of allowing:
– Allowing space for ideas to emerge.
– Allowing time for joy to surface.
– Allowing yourself to be, not just do.
Yutori isn’t a luxury. It’s an essential life, leadership, and performance skill.
The most powerful insights, decisions, and transformations don’t come when you’re rushing, they come when you create room for them.
Why a Space-less Life Leaves You Empty
Without Yutori:
– Your days feel like a race – but where’s the finish line?
– Your conversations feel rushed – missing the real connections.
– Your work feels reactive – high on hustle, low on insight.
– Life feels blurred – the precious moments slipping by, unnoticed.
So many of my clients, before working with me, find themselves in this state constantly. They’re highly successful, yet deeply disconnected.
The Turning Point
Your greatest breakthroughs – personally and professionally – never happened in a rush.
They happened in the gaps:
– During a morning walk, when an unexpected solution surfaced
– In the silence after a coaching or journaling question, when you found your truth
– In moments of stillness, when clarity replaced confusion
One of my favorite parts of my day is picking up my daughter from nursery – her bright eyes, stomping boots, and beaming smile as she runs towards me, excited to tell me all about her day!
In the past, when my mind was racing – rehashing the day or planning the next – I would have often missed these precious moments. Moments that are limited in number.
This is what Yutori offers: Space to experience life’s fullness.
Why Space Creates More, Not Less
1.Space Expands Time: The Einstein Effect
Einstein taught us: Time is relative.
Gay Hendricks, in The Big Leap, calls this Einstein Time – where time expands when you’re fully present.
Ever been in a conversation so rich that hours felt like minutes?
Or a moment of joy that felt timeless?
That’s Yutori.
When you create space, you collapse time – because you’re in it, not chasing it.
2.Space Creates Insight: The Third Mind Effect
Napoleon Hill described how, in a true mastermind conversation, a third mind emerges – an intelligence beyond the sum of two individuals.
But here’s the catch:
The third mind only appears in space.
In my coaching work, my clients don’t transform because of our words.
They transform in the space between them – where silence allows the real insights to arise.
3.Space Makes Life Worth Living
Life’s most precious moments are small:
– Your child’s laughter
– A friend’s lingering smile
– A quiet sunset after a chaotic day
But when your mind is crowded, you miss them.
You’re there – but not present.
And what’s the point of success if you’re never in your life to experience it?
How to Practice Yutori: 3 Habits That Will Change Your Life
1.Morning Spaciousness: Create Before You Consume
Most people start their day with input – emails, news, social media – immediately filling their mental space.
For the next 7 days, spend your first 5 minutes in silence.
No phone. No podcasts. Just space.
Close your eyes. Breathe. Allow your mind to wander.
This is where your most profound ideas – ones that can’t be Googled – will surface.
2.Conversational Spaciousness: The Power of the Pause
We rush conversations, filling every silence with words – missing the insight beneath.
Next time you’re in a conversation, pause for 3 seconds before replying.
Let the silence breathe.
This pause is where the “third mind” emerges – where deeper truths and connections are found.
3. Calendar Spaciousness: Stop Back-to-Back Living
Meetings stacked like dominoes leave no room for transition – or insight.
Build 10-minute buffers between meetings.
Not for emails. For being.
Take a breath. Step outside. Or simply pause.
Because it’s often in the between – not the busy – where clarity appears.
Yutori Is a Choice – But Also a Skill
It takes courage to live with Yutori.
The world rewards speed, but clarity lives in stillness.
The world rewards hustle, but joy lives in presence.
The world rewards filling, but creation lives in space.
So, Here’s My Question for You:
Where in your life are you overfilling – and where could you allow more space?
Hit reply. I’d love to hear.
Because in the end, Yutori isn’t about doing less.
It’s about experiencing more.
Here’s to creating with space.
