When Pain Becomes Power
Jaineel Mistry
As I ran on the trail this Monday morning, my foot landed horribly on one of the rocks. I sprained my left ankle. In the middle of the field I screamed out in pain. It was the second time I’d done this in just a few months.
But this time, something was different.
All day Sunday I’d been at David Ghiyam’s seminar in London. He’s a spiritual educator who teaches Kabbalah, and I’ve been going deep on it this year.
One of the core teachings of Kabbalah is this: love the pain.
Not self-inflicted pain. But the type of pain that’s tied to purpose. The pain that shows up when you’re stretching beyond your comfort zone. When you’re building the life you truly want.
In Kabbalah, they teach that pain is our spiritual training. It expands our capacity to receive more light, more growth, more of what we’re meant to become.
David has a mantra he teaches when we’re confronting pain:
“Pause, what a gift.”
Immediately, I knew this was my moment to practice it.
So there I was, both hands on my knees, face down looking at my throbbing ankle. I paused. And I shouted out loud, “WHAT A GIFT!”
I said it three or four times.
I kept going.
“Thank you. I love the pain. Bring me more!”
In that moment, I shifted my consciousness. Not to the pain itself, but to the energy inside me who was greater than the pain.
As I walked back, I was stunned at how quickly the pain dissolved.
By the time I got home, I felt almost nothing.
Last time this happened, my recovery took weeks. This time? Minutes.
Now my logical, scientific mind wants to jump in. Maybe the twist wasn’t as severe (it felt just as severe). Maybe I didn’t damage as many ligaments etc.
But here’s the real lesson…
Many spiritually inclined people interpret their challenges as signs from the Universe to stop.
“Maybe I’m not meant to run today.”
I’ve been there. I used to be this person. I find myself there at times.
But as I continued with a light jog, something powerful shifted inside me. I felt more alive than I had in weeks.
During my marathon training, the most painful runs were the ones that made me feel MOST ALIVE in the end. Why? Because I became a more powerful runner.
Right now, whatever challenge you’re facing, whether in relationships, in business, in your health, I want you to hear this:
The pain you experience while creating your dreams isn’t a stop sign.
It’s purposeful.
The pain is expanding your capacity to receive what you truly desire and who you want to become. It’s uncomfortable. You find yourself in fear, in scarcity, out of your comfort zone. Your internal dialogue gets loud. Self-doubt creeps in.
But when you’re in alignment with your purpose, this type of pain isn’t suffering. This growth makes you feel alive.
Here’s how to approach it differently:
See how quickly this changes your state. See how it transforms your ability to be greater than your circumstances.
In that moment, you become the one who is greater than the pain. You move closer to your true nature.
The energy that’s far greater than your small, temporary discomfort.
So I ask you:
What purposeful pain in your life can you pause and say, “thank you, what a gift!”?
