Self-Doubt and Impatient? Here Are 3 Reminders
Jaineel Mistry
This week has been a week of self-doubt, frustration, and impatience for me. Whenever these kinds of days and weeks come, I find reassurance and alignment by revisiting one of my favourite books: Mastery by George Leonard.
So today, I’m going to share with you 5 reminders that helped me this week whilst working on some of the most important projects in my life right now.
If you’re feeling trapped by self-doubt, uncertain about your path, or frustrated by a lack of immediate results, this is for you.
The Problem
In a world that celebrates speed, quick wins, and instant gratification, many of us fall into the trap of chasing immediate success. We crave quick results, and when progress feels slow, it’s easy to feel stuck, question our abilities, or even abandon our goals. This mindset often results in short-term wins but lacks the depth for long-lasting fulfilment and real results.
Let’s explore five core principles from Mastery that can help us stay grounded and committed to the path, even when the results aren’t immediate.
1. Embrace the Plateau
We all experience phases of stagnation—times when progress seems to halt, and self-doubt starts to creep in. You might feel like you’re putting in all this effort but seeing no tangible results.
If you give up when progress slows down, you’ll never reach your potential. The plateau is where most people quit, missing out on the real transformation.
Leonard explains, “The plateau must be seen as part of the path to mastery. By staying on the path, we are led forward, in a roundabout way.” This period of little progress is where true mastery forms. It’s not a dead-end but a necessary phase for skill development and mental resilience.
By embracing the plateau, you build the foundation for greatness. When you accept that growth isn’t linear, you can push through and find fulfilment beyond the quick wins.
Remember, it only takes one “yes” to change your life and the trajectory of your business, career or creative project. Everything that precedes this “yes” is helping you in the becoming. Allowing you to be the right person for when that “yes” comes.
2. Shift from Short-Term to Long-Term Thinking
Today’s culture rewards speed and instant results. This often leads to burnout, frustration, and a lack of genuine fulfilment. The chase for immediate success prevents true growth. I’ve become increasingly aware of how social media is having a negative impact on my mind. It’s become more dopamine hungry chasing the quick hits.
Focusing only on short-term gains can keep you in a cycle of superficial achievements. In the end, it leaves you feeling unfulfilled and always in pursuit of the next superficial thing.
Leonard teaches that mastery isn’t about rushing to the finish line; it’s about embracing the journey itself. “What may seem like a roundabout of circles with little progress, actually is an upward spiral of progress,” he notes.

Where are you trying to “get there quickly”. Where could that mindset shift to “stay on the path.” This change allows you to see setbacks and delays as part of the process rather than reasons to quit. You begin to value depth over speed.
3. Self-Doubt as a Tool for Growth
Dealing with self-doubt can be tough, especially when you’re not seeing immediate results. It’s easy to interpret the lack of progress as a sign that you’re not good enough or that your goals are out of reach.
Notice the narrative you are giving attention to in your mind.
Left unchecked, self-doubt can lead to abandoning your path entirely. If every time doubt arises, you second-guess yourself, you’ll never reach the person you want to become.
Leonard highlights that doubt is natural and part of the journey. Instead of viewing it as a reason to quit, see it as an invitation to go deeper. Self-doubt isn’t a stop sign; it’s a signal to become greater than your thoughts.
When self-doubt arises, it can be used as a sign to slow your mind, become aware, and rise above those thoughts. Who you are is not your mental narrative. You are greater than these thoughts.
The more you create space between you and your thinking the greater your ability to navigate your narrative.
4. Prioritise Consistent Aligned Intentional Action
You may be comparing yourself to someone you look up to on social media. You might see them as naturally talented. Chances are, they’ve just been practising the skill longer behind the scenes.
If you believe success is about talent, you’ll feel defeated when progress is slow or when setbacks arise. This mindset prevents you from giving your best because you feel like you’re lacking something.
Leonard reminds us that mastery is about consistent action, not talent. I would argue it’s about intentional aligned action. Are you being a scatter gun and acting for the sake of acting? That has very high energy usage and not much output. True leverage is when you are intentional and focused. More like a sniper.
“Intentionality fuels the master’s journey. Every master is a master of vision.” he echoes, reinforcing that those who consistently put in intentional action will outpace those who rely solely on natural ability.
By focusing on regular, disciplined practice, you unlock a sustainable path to growth. Your commitment becomes your greatest asset, allowing you to progress steadily.
5. Learn to Love the Process
In the pursuit of outcomes, we often overlook the value of the process itself. You’re going to die one day – stop taking it all so seriously!!
When you’re only focused on the end goal, you miss out on the lessons and growth that come from the journey.
If you only value outcomes, you’ll feel empty when you reach them and discouraged when you don’t. This rollercoaster can make it difficult to stay motivated and committed.
Leonard’s philosophy is clear: “You win by staying on the path. Not by rushing the journey.”
By learning to appreciate the process, you allow yourself to grow at your own pace, celebrating small victories and lessons along the way without sacrificing your inner peace.
When you fall in love with the process, you become unstoppable. Each step you take, no matter how small, fuels your journey, leading to a more fulfilling and grounded approach to life.
Final Reflection
Mastery isn’t a destination; it’s a lifelong commitment. In a world obsessed with quick wins, the real challenge lies in staying true to your path, even when progress seems slow. Remember, every plateau, every doubt, every setback is a step toward growth.
