Being in Harmony With the Mess in Your Life
Jaineel Mistry
Today, I’m going to share the importance of being in harmony with a mess in our lives.
If you’re part of my email community, you’re someone who is ambitious, who wants to achieve things, who wants to create things. The problem many of us face is that our minds crave order. It craves things to be linear, simple, and easy. It wants to take the path of least resistance. Many times, it predicts life will be easier than what seems to happen in reality and it predicts what we want will come to fruition sooner than it actually does.
I’m someone who likes to keep things simple. Yet, I’ve learned, if I want to achieve many things in different areas of life, I must embrace the chaotic mess that life sometimes is.
The greater you are able to deal with the mess, the greater likelihood of your success.
What Do I Mean by Mess?
In any one moment in life, you’ve got multiple things that are yearning for your attention. It may be children that need feeding and clothing, gym workouts to stick to, house chores, firefighting a problem at work, and organising your team, packing for a holiday, organising your finances, let alone making sure you’ve eaten healthy. All of these can sometimes feel chaotic. Even though we have life systems in place, as we grow in multiple areas at the same time, the systems are constantly needing adjustment and refinement or a complete overhaul.
Some of the most successful people I have come across don’t have calm and simple lives on the outside. They find calm, simplicity, and peace amongst the chaos of their world. The mess is external. There are a number of stimuli all fighting for your attention. All needing attention. You’re juggling multiple pieces.
How Much Can You Handle?
I remember when I first started Thriving Scholar. One morning I woke up stressing about a logo design that someone was doing for me via Fiverr. A logo!!! It sounds so silly as I write this. At that point in my life, I was nowhere near as resilient as I am today. What I could handle back then was very minimal. I wasn’t in a relationship. Living with my parents. Had a day job as an analyst. My responsibilities in life were very minimal. I didn’t need to handle much.
As we allow our desires in life to flow through us, we are called to become more. As I started to grow a coaching and training business, I was hit with many areas that initially felt chaotic to me. I wasn’t able to “handle” much. I used to stress about what now seems small and minor things, in hindsight. I’ve learned that I must be ok with this area outside my comfort zone. I have to embrace the chaos initially. Over time, my mind adjusts and seems to find its bearing. The resilience, groundedness, and ability to stay calm when there’s a lot of things on the line compounds over time.
How Well Can You Deal with Failure and Not Having the Answers?
As you continue on this journey of life, the stakes get higher. You have greater responsibilities at home, you take greater risks in business, you challenge yourself more with achieving health and fitness goals. Remember this: it doesn’t get easier, you become better. Becoming better means allowing yourself to be in chaos.
The Law of Physics and Chaos
The law of physics states that for us to become more, there must be chaos to create new order. According to the Second Law of Thermodynamics, systems naturally progress from a state of order to disorder. However, within this process, pockets of order can emerge, leading to new structures and complexities. For instance, in weather systems, turbulent flows can result in the formation of stable patterns like hurricanes or cyclones. In biological evolution, genetic mutations and environmental pressures introduce chaos, but over time, natural selection acts on this chaos to create new and more adapted species. There’s a lot we can learn from nature.
You may feel isolated as many people around you are not playing this game of growth. They are happy living the same life day in and day out and you wonder why you were born differently. You have an obsession within you to expand, to evolve, to play a bigger game.
My message to you today is to keep going. Surround yourself with people who are on the journey of self-mastery and growth. Be kind to yourself. It may feel messy and chaotic right now and it sometimes doesn’t feel so great. But connect with who you’ve become. It’s always worked out for you when you continue to follow what’s true to you and embrace change.
It’s not about reducing the momentum on the outside, it’s about finding peace and calm within yourself as the momentum of life increases and you allow more life to flow through you.
