7 Lessons From 2024
Jaineel Mistry
As the year draws to a close, I’ve spent the past week reflecting deeply on 2024. This year, more than anything, has been about building foundations—keeping things steady and stable rather than chasing extremes.
While it’s been a year of consistency, it hasn’t come without its lessons. Some have emerged from successes; others from moments of struggle. Today, I share my top seven lessons from this year—insights that have shaped me and how I intend to carry them forward into 2025.
Lesson 1: Without deep work, dreams remain dreams
This year, I began waking up earlier to carve out quiet time for deep, focused work. From 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., I’d write, create, and move closer to my goals before the world woke up. But even with this practice, staying consistent proved difficult. Life crept in—late nights, rough sleep, clash with parenting duties, and periods of low energy. I realized that my mornings were only as good as my evenings routine and organised planning at home.
When I skipped my evening routine or not organised the morning well enough with family duties, I’d miss my deep work slot, and with it, my momentum for the day. I fell behind on my book writing this year, and while there were valid reasons, part of me knows it came down to not protecting that sacred morning space.
Action for 2025: In additional to clear roles and responsibilities at home in the mornings, my evenings will be designed to support productive mornings. From better sleep hygiene to intentional wind-downs, my focus will be on ensuring my deep work hours are sacred and consistent—because that’s where my dreams come to life.
Lesson 2: Letting go of self-judgment is a superpower
I’ve always been my own harshest critic. This year, I found myself repeatedly caught in loops of self-judgment. Sometimes it was about not achieving enough; other times, it was about comparing myself to peers. My inner voice wasn’t always kind, and it often dragged me into a spiral of frustration and doubt.
But I’ve started to see judgment for what it is—a mental habit, not a truth. This year, I’ve been working on catching those moments earlier, letting go of judgment, and shifting back to the present. I’ve realized that the quicker I release self-judgment, the quicker I can move forward. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being compassionate with myself and refocusing on what I want to create.
Action for 2025: Practice even greater kindness toward myself. When self-judgment arises, I’ll focus on quickly letting it go and redirecting my energy toward the present moment and refocusing on my path forward.
Lesson 3: You must think highly of yourself first before expecting others to
There were moments this year when I didn’t fully recognize the impact of my work. Despite receiving heartfelt feedback from clients and peers, I struggled to internalize it. Deep down, I realized I was looking for validation outside of myself, hoping others would affirm my worth.
This lesson hit me hard—I can’t expect others to think highly of me if I don’t think highly of myself. It’s not about arrogance; it’s about honouring the unique energy and gifts I bring to the world. When I see myself clearly, I stand taller and feel better. I create more powerfully. I lead more authentically. I come from a place of complete conviction and true confidence.
Action for 2025: I’ll focus on “energetic calibration” during my morning and evening meditations. Twice daily, I’ll consciously create a vision of my higher self and align my energy with that version of me in the present moment.
Lesson 4: Results matter—own them
This year, I fell into the trap of focusing on the process and ignoring the results. There were times I avoided confronting my lack of results because it felt uncomfortable—it meant facing where I’d fallen short. But avoiding it only left me stuck.
I’ve learned that results are feedback. They’re not personal—they’re data. When I approached my results with curiosity instead of guilt, I started to see where I needed to adjust my process. Ignoring results may feel easier in the moment—but it only prolongs the discomfort. Owning my results, even the ones I’m not proud of, has been one of the most empowering shifts this year. It’s taught me that I am responsible for the outcomes I create and that clarity about results is the foundation for meaningful progress.
Yes, process and the journey is important, but let’s get real – results are what matter in the end.
Action for 2025: Be brutally honest about the results I want to achieve and regularly track my progress toward them. I’ll confront lack of results with curiosity, not avoidance, and refine my processes to ensure they align with my goals.
Lesson 5: Be clear on what you really want—with no judgment
The world is noisy. Social media, peers, and societal norms constantly tell us what we should want. This year, I found myself getting distracted by the noise—scrolling endlessly, comparing myself to others, and feeling disconnected from my own inner voice.
Clarity doesn’t come from external validation; it comes from within. When I took the time to quiet the noise—through journaling, meditation, and introspection—I reconnected with what I truly wanted. And when I honoured those desires without judgment, I felt more aligned and alive.
Action for 2025: I’ll reduce my social media consumption by implementing clear boundaries. I’m exploring the idea of having a separate phone for social media to create a physical barrier between work and life. Additionally, I’ll journal every morning on the question, “What do I want?” to reconnect with my inner voice.
Lesson 6: Focus on the long-term feeling, not the short-term discomfort
This year, I’ve avoided tasks that felt uncomfortable in the moment—marketing initiatives, difficult conversations, or even certain creative projects. I let short-term discomfort hold me back, even though I knew those actions would lead to long-term growth.
But the moments when I pushed through the discomfort taught me something important: it’s not about how I feel in the moment; it’s about how I’ll feel afterward. For example, every time I went for a run in the rain or tackled a challenging task, I ended up feeling proud, accomplished, and alive. Focusing on the after feeling has been a game-changer.
Action for 2025: Before making decisions, I’ll ask myself, “How will I feel after I’ve done this?” This simple question will help me prioritize long-term fulfillment over short-term avoidance.
Lesson 7: I’m happiest when I’m challenging myself
This year, I played it safe. I kept things steady, focused on maintaining routines, and avoided pushing myself too hard. On the surface, it seemed like a wise choice. But deep down, I felt miserable.
I’ve realized that I’m happiest when I’m pushing boundaries—not for the sake of achieving more, but for the sake of being more. I thrive when I’m stepping into the fullest, most expansive version of myself. Holding back, even with good intentions, feels like betraying who I am at my core.
Action for 2025: I’m giving myself full permission to dream big, take bold actions, and embrace my higher self. I’ll challenge myself to think bigger, lead more courageously, and fully embody the leader I’m meant to be.
