3 Essential Steps to Ensure You’re on the Right Path
Jaineel Mistry
Today, I’m going to share 3 key points on how you can make sure you’re on the right path in life, and of not, what to do about it.
Key takeaway points from today:
You probably have a couple of “ladders” you are currently on.
Maybe you’re considering coming off one and changing direction.
Maybe you’re questioning yourself and the direction you are headed with your career or business.
Or maybe you’ve climbed a ladder to the top to realise it hasn’t made you feel the way you thought it would and now wondering what to do.
Either way, there may be feelings of uncertainty, confusion, and doubt.
The problem we face is this constant inner questioning of:
Am I on the right path? Am I working on the right thing?
Which ladder you climb is one of the most important decisions in your life.
My Story
It was 4 PM on a Wednesday afternoon in 2014, and I was on the 7th floor of an office building, overlooking the dull London skyline. The clouds were low and grey which reflected my mood.
My mind said I had “made it” in my career but internally, I lacked fulfilment. I was lost, I didn’t know who I was and felt trapped. It was becoming clear, long term, I wasn’t climbing the right ladder.
I was a year into my management consulting role within the pharmaceutical industry and this realisation is what got me curious into exploring the world of personal growth, spirituality, entrepreneurship and more.
I had already climbed and jumped a couple ladders by that time and now I was on the verge of another jump.
Fast forward nearly 10 years, I’ve felt like I’m on a couple ladders at the same time but I finally feel I’m in the right place.
I have coached other people on their journey of deep introspection, courageous action toward creating a life that’s aligned with their truth.
From highly successful entrepreneurs who have reached a pinnacle and the top of one ladder, to those who have just started climbing.
I share 3 things I’ve learned. I hope these are valuable for your journey.
1. Create space to combat habitual reaction
A lot of people live a life of habitual reaction from the past. We are all humans and we are habitual creatures. Many find themselves going through the motions in life not really reflecting on the direction they are headed in.
This could be in their health, their career, and their family life.
Imagine coming up to the end of your life looking back thinking “omg, I didn’t even live my life true to myself.”
Studies have shown this is one of the common regrets in people who are on the verge of death.
So, what’s the solution?
Reflection:
All it requires is some mental space in your hectic and busy life to stop being busy and actually reflect:
If it feels good, great – you are on the right path.
Feeling good about it is like an inner compass guiding you saying you’re in alignment.
If it feels a bit off, or really bad – great!
You’ve just saved yourself 10 years. Now that you know that you’re not heading in the right direction for you, you’re in a position to act on it.
This is when the work starts with more deeper introspection. This is the level where I love working with, with my clients.
Fulfilment never comes from being high on the ladder.
Fulfilment comes from having your ladder up against the right wall.
“If you don’t change direction, you may end up where you’re heading.” – Lao Zhu

2. If you don’t know what wall, just climb up any ladder
Now I’m going to contradict what I just said above…but hear me out…
The problem many face is being stuck in the zone of paralysis by analysis.
I’ve met people contemplating on their direction in life for 10 years without making a single move. They remain stay stuck there.
A common question I am asked is what is the balance between action and reflection?
There is no one answer to this and it depends on your situation.
But if you’re someone who’s waiting for clarity to come to you before acting, it’s a form of self-sabotage.
An example of how this shows up:
“I really want to start that business but I just don’t know where to start.”
“I really want to leave my job, but I just don’t know what else I can do.”
“I’ve feel like I’ve achieved all I wanted to from this business but I feel empty inside and I don’t know where to begin for the next thing.”
JUST START SOMEWHERE!
Start climbing the wall. Anywhere. For god’s sake act on your intuition!
Do something! MOVE!
When I knew I wanted to have a career and business in the personal growth space. I just started a blog and wrote. As I started to act and attend events, workshops etc. I realised how many areas I could go into. So much more was revealed as I continued to act.
As you start to act in a direction you want to go in, things start opening up. You gain more clarity. You start realising how many options are within “one wall”. You realise what you don’t like. What you do like.
So, there’s a balance. Being in the right direction is important. But at times, when the direction is unclear it may make sense to go faster. As you go faster you’ll find out whether it’s the right path or not quicker.
“As you start to walk the way, the way appears.” – Rumi
3. Take small steps on aligned action
People like step by step guides and a straightforward path to success. You are experienced in life enough now to know that doesn’t exist.
One person’s path of climbing a wall will be different to another.
If you continue to look for methods that have worked for others’ path but not tailored to yours, you’ll end up frustrated, burnt out, and drowning in your lack of success.
This is why it’s important to slow your mind and create space to connect with yourself. Connect with your intuition and maintain your alignment.
Your path is unique. Your life is unique. And you have a compass within you guiding you in every moment.
The answers all lie there.
You don’t need to focus on the next 10 steps and have it all figured out. Go within and follow those little bursts of excitement, those small impulses, those nudges from the Universe to act in a particular direction.
And then take the next step.
Over the space of years you’ll be surprised as to what you’ve created.
